Polonnaruwa Vatadage in Sri Lanka

Initially established as a military post and briefly ruled by the South Indian Chola dynasty in the late 10th century, it was recaptured and made the capital by Sinhalese King Vijayabahu I in 1070. The kingdom reached its zenith under King Parakramabahu I (1153–1186), who oversaw a Golden Age characterized by sophisticated irrigation projects, notably the vast Parakrama Samudra reservoir, and significant architectural and cultural development. Today, the well-preserved ruins of its palaces, temples, and colossal Buddha statues like those at Gal Vihara stand as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering a glimpse into this magnificent medieval era.

Explore the timeless beauty of the Polonnaruwa Vatadage, a true masterpiece of ancient Sri Lankan architecture! This unique circular relic house, believed to have once held the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, is a testament to the incredible craftsmanship of the Polonnaruwa Kingdom. With its stunning stone carvings, beautiful moonstones, and intricate guardstones, it's a must-see for anyone exploring Sri Lanka's rich history.
The Founders and Purpose

• King Parakramabahu I (1153-1186 CE): One of the most prominent theories is that the Vatadage was originally built by King Parakramabahu the Great. Ancient chronicles, like the Culavamsa, mention that he constructed a circular stone shrine to house the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. This connection is a major reason why the Vatadage is considered a highly revered site.
King Nissanka Malla (1187-1196 CE): Another theory suggests it was built or at least significantly renovated by King Nissanka Malla. His own inscriptions, such as the Gal Potha (Stone Book), claim that he built a "Ratnagiri Vatadage" within the Dalada Maluwa. This suggests that he either constructed a new one or, more likely, carried out major reconstruction and beautification work on an existing structure. The well-preserved state of the Vatadage today is often attributed to his efforts.
