The Sri Lanka Air Force Museum in Ratmalana is the country's only national museum dedicated to aviation. It serves as a comprehensive chronicle of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) from its inception as the Royal Ceylon Air Force to the modern day, offering a unique mix of historical artifacts, vintage aircraft, and interactive experiences.

➤ Main Exhibits and Attractions

The museum is organized into several hangars and an outdoor display area, each focusing on a different era or aspect of aviation history.

* Main Hangar & Aircraft Collection: Features a wide array of vintage aircraft, including the De Havilland Tiger Moth, the Chipmunk TMK. 10, and the HS 748 Avro. Notable displays also include the Jet Provost T.51, the first jet aircraft used by the force.

* Outdoor Exhibits: Displays larger aircraft and captured equipment, such as the remains of LTTE aircraft and a 130mm howitzer.

* Historical Artifacts: Beyond planes, the museum houses the medals and sword of Air Vice Marshal E. R. Amarasekara, the first Ceylonese Commander. It also features unique land vehicles, such as a former President's armored limousine and an Austin firefighting vehicle.

* Specialty Galleries: Hangar No. 1 and 2 depict general aviation history in Sri Lanka and house flags, air defense guns, and simulators. There is even a model of the legendary "Dandu Monara" from local folklore.

➤ Visitor Experience and Facilities

Visitors often find the museum to be an educational and engaging destination for families and aviation enthusiasts alike, typically spending 1.5 to 4 hours exploring.
 * Mini Theater: A flight entertainment center

designed to simulate an aircraft cabin environment, providing a brief but immersive history of the SLAF’s achievements.
 * Family-Friendly Amenities: Includes a dedicated children’s play area with a small maze, an outdoor picnic area, and a restaurant with views  overlooking the nearby marshland.
 * Aviation Library: A research reference library is available for those who want to dive deeper into the technical and historical detais of flight.

➤ Practical Information
 * Opening Hours: Open Tuesday through Sunday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. It is closed on Mondays, Poya days, and public holidays.
 * Entry Requirements: While generally open to the public, foreign visitors have historically been required to obtain special approval from the Ministry of Defence, and some reports suggest a written application to the Commanding Officer may be necessary for certain visits.
 * Photography & Dress Code: Reviewers report that photography is generally permitted in the museum area, though it is strictly prohibited to photograph the active military sections of the Ratmalana Air Force Base. There is no formal dress code, but a "smart casual" approach is recommended as it is a military establishment; school children are encouraged to visit in uniform for a discounted entry fee.
